Heroines of the Bible Series - Tabitha

Image
Acts 9:36—40   Quite an inspiring story we have here, about the life of a woman who was simply a saint. There is very little said about her personal life but a lot about how she lived. She spent her life giving and blessing people, and when she died, the mourning at her grave side was genuine. No show here, no gimmicks—just the heart-wrenching tears that comes from losing a truly rare gem. That’s how we came to hear about this great woman called Dorcas (also known as Tabitha) 36 In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. 37 About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. 38 Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!” 39 Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing ...

Heroines of the Bible Series- Deborah

Image
Judges 4:4 -5 The Bible heroine we are looking at today is a popular one – most Bible readers know her story, or have heard about it at some point in their Christian lives. She needs no lengthy introduction; she is none other than the respected judge … drum roll please … Deborah. I love this woman. I’m a big fan and have been since I first read her story as a child. Deborah is known as the great prophetess who stood up and led the children of Israel into battle against Jabin’s army when Barak, the leader at the time, cowered away in fear. Now, that’s the popular side of Deborah everyone has read about – but the side I want to place emphasis on today is her role as a judge. 4 Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time. 5 She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided. Deborah was the first female judge ever, even before ...

Written by Funmi Yusuf Are you daft or do you just approach issues differently? In a world of diversity where many internal and external influences come into play to define people’s characters and peculiarities; we are often still caught up in the confinement of expecting certain orthodox attitudes and behavioral patterns from the people around us. Many of us have been exposed to the knowledge and concept of diverse personalities hence the possibility of varied responses to situations yet majority are still wrapped in the limitation of expecting certain approaches from people when those people deal with issues. With all the available expose on personality differences, nature & nurture influences, personal convictions etc. why then do we have so many misunderstandings amongst spouses, family members, colleagues, friends, neighbors, acquaintances and in the society as a whole? While there will always be clashes of interests when dealing with a matter because of the personal...

Heroine of the Bible – Anna

Image
Luke 2: 36–38 Today we look into the life of our second heroine, a woman called Anna. The Bible calls her a prophetess. When you read Anna’s story, at first you may be tempted to skim over and think, “Nothing unusual. She was a prophetess and spent a great deal of her life in the temple,” but let’s take a closer look. 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; What first struck me about this heroine was that fact that she became a widow seven years after she had married her husband. I can only imagine what that’s like—losing her husband at the time when they had just settled into their lives and were beginning to really enjoy the union. And what was more painful was that she married her husband as a virgin. So she kept herself all through her growing-up years for the one man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with, and then seven years after the...
