Go with the flow

This is an interesting conversation for me. Every time I hear someone talk about purpose, I wonder, “Just how much influence can you have on how life turns out?”

When you watch the movie Hercules, you see how a man defies prophecies and charts his own life’s course. When you watch the movie Troy, you see how another man, Achilles, goes against prophecies, but his life ends up just as it was prophesied. And when you read some self-help books, you see a lot of examples of people in our time who took charge of their life and made it what they wanted it to be. But then we’ve all met people who’ve worked tirelessly and still don’t have the life they desire. So what do we conclude? Does human life depend on some grand plan from God, or can man actually make his own destiny?

"For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, in order that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not by works, but by Him that calleth), it was said unto her, “The elder shall serve the younger.” Romans 9:11-12 - Version (KJ21)

If it were decided before the twins were born—before they did one act of right or wrong—who would lead and who would serve, can you then say a man can chart the course of his life? I’m guessing no. So, there’s no point in fighting, envying, trying to be like someone else, or obsessing. God makes choices and elects people for certain roles before they are born. People are just trying to fulfill that plan; therefore, go with the flow.

When you go with the flow, find your natural tendencies, passions, and abilities. If you are naturally inclined to something, you most likely are aligning with the course of God, and success is more likely. But going with the flow takes some courage and tons of hard work. If you tie up your natural tendencies, courage, and hard work, you have a threefold cord that cannot be easily broken.

Yes, a man can chart the course of his life. But he will be successful only when it aligns with God’s calling.

  1. Good read. i think those that believe they chart the course of their lives undermine the power of God at work in their lives...whether they believe in Him or not. Ultimately, we cannot enforce anything God has not allowed. So its up to us to align with His will so we can get all the help & cushion we need!

  2. I agree with you Funmi. If we really want to be successful and walk the path of least resistance, then alignment with God is the only way to go.

  3. Seye, as I began to read your post I was worried you would totally rearrange what I have believed for years. I wondered how long it would take me to unlearn. I am glad that your thinking aligns with mine on the subject. This the reason I teach people in my seminars to discover their calling and pursue it. I suggest that one way of discovering your calling is to profile your natural gifts and talents. By moving in the direction your passion, gifts and talents take you, you are actually aligning with God's calling on your life.
