A Beautiful Soul: Guarding the Light Within
At the core of who we are—beneath our appearance, our accomplishments, our possessions, and even the roles we play—is our soul.
It is the essence of who we are.
And when God created us, He created something beautiful. A soul capable of joy, hope, creativity, love, compassion, kindness, and connection. He placed His light within humanity and created us in His image.
There is something about the soul of a child that gives us a glimpse of this beauty in its purest form. A baby enters the world innocent and open—ready to love, trust, laugh, explore, and receive love without reservation.
But then life happens.
We experience disappointment.
Rejection.
Betrayal.
Failure.
Loss.
Shame.
Regret.
Words are spoken that we cannot unhear. People we trusted hurt us. Dreams we believed in don't happen the way we imagined. And sometimes, without realizing it, we begin allowing those experiences to change us.
It is as though life fires arrows at the soul.
One arrow becomes bitterness. Another becomes resentment. Another becomes fear. Another becomes shame. And if we are not careful, the beautiful, hopeful person God created can slowly become guarded, cynical, angry, suspicious, or hardened.
The enemy would love nothing more than to extinguish the light God placed within us.
But we don't have to let him.
We can become protectors of our souls.
Every time we choose forgiveness instead of bitterness, we protect our soul.
Every time we choose love instead of hatred, we protect our soul.
Every time we choose empathy instead of judgment, we protect our soul.
Every time we choose hope when circumstances tell us to despair, we protect our soul.
Every time we refuse to allow someone's actions to turn us into someone we were never created to be, we protect our soul.
This doesn't mean pretending that pain doesn't hurt. It doesn't mean remaining in unhealthy situations or allowing people to mistreat us. Sometimes protecting our soul means setting boundaries, walking away, speaking the truth, or refusing to carry what was never ours to carry.
But it does mean refusing to let what happened to us determine what happens within us.
Because perhaps one of the greatest questions we can ask after a painful experience isn't simply, "Why did this happen to me?"
It is:
"What is this experience doing to my soul?"
Is it making me bitter or wiser?
Harder or stronger?
More hateful or more compassionate?
More fearful or more dependent on God?
Pain may leave scars, but it does not have to steal our light.
And our responsibility goes beyond protecting our own souls. We should also become protectors of the souls of the people God places around us.
Imagine what could happen if we made a collective decision to leave people's souls more beautiful than we found them.
Instead of tearing down, we build up.
Instead of constant criticism, we encourage.
Instead of holding grudges, we release.
Instead of humiliating, we restore dignity.
Instead of adding darkness to someone's life, we bring light.
We may not be able to remove all the darkness in the world individually. But collectively, we can refuse to contribute to it.
Jesus said:
"You are the light of the world."
Matthew 5:14
Light does not need to fight darkness to prove that it is light.
It simply shines.
Perhaps that is part of our assignment here on earth: to protect the beautiful soul God entrusted to us and to help protect the beauty He placed in others.
To forgive.
To love.
To hope.
To encourage.
To heal.
To shine.
And maybe, little by little, we begin to experience glimpses of what God intended from the beginning—a world filled with His goodness, His love, His beauty, and His light.
A little glimpse of Eden.
So today, make a pact with yourself:
I will protect my soul.
I will not allow bitterness to steal my joy.
I will not allow disappointment to steal my hope.
I will not allow hatred to change my heart.
I will guard the light God placed within me.
And wherever possible, I will protect that light in others too.
Because beneath everything life has added, taken away, bruised, or changed, there is still something precious that God created.
You truly are a beautiful soul.
And so am I.
