Rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of despair

Image
I was reading about the phoenix, an ancient Greek mythological bird with the ability to be reborn out of the ashes of destruction. What I found fascinating was the simple notion that when all seemed destroyed, something good came out of it. It’s encouraging to know that where one thing ends, another new life begins. When we look around our world today, we see lots of pain and despair. It could be the pain from dealing with illness due to the virus, despair from the uncertainty of tomorrow or the gloom of being stuck at home. In these moments, it’s only natural to feel all these emotions in the face of dire or fatal circumstances. But it’s not the emotions we feel that matters, it’s how we handle them. While there are many ways to deal with our emotions, I will like to leave you with a few: Live You can worry as much as you want but the reality is that all you have is today and now. You might as well just live in the moment and make the best of each second you have. I...

How to look dapper @ 70

I recently saw a picture of an elderly gentleman dressed up and ready to attend a church service. I thought to myself, “Wow, I’m half his age, and he’s in much better shape than I am!” That made me wonder: “What’s my body going to look like when I’m that age?” I suspected it may not look as good, so I studied his lifestyle and decided to make some changes to mine. So here are a few tips to help you also remain fit and healthy… because whether or not we like it, we will all grow old someday. 1.    Exercise – My stay-fit inspiration spent a good part of his life as an Army man, so he clearly understands the importance of exercising. He spends time exercising every day, especially walking. And yes, the Bible says bodily exercises profits little… but it does profit something. So let’s get that something no matter how small it is. It doesn’t have to be running a thousand miles a day; it may be as little as taking a stroll every evening or learning to dance. Any form of...

Image
If you have even seen Nigerian meals prepared and presented in an unconventional way it was probably done by Chef Fregz...so meet the genius behind this creativity- Gbubemi Fregene. I saw the picture of the Plantain and fish canapés on Instagram and it got me all wondering ‘how did he get here’. So how did you? Thank you first of all for following. I got ‘here’ by being intrigued about how good tasting food was made as a young boy. I moved on to actually trying to make it for myself. And then I realized it was a passion and something I was ready to do every day of life for the rest of my life. So pretty much how I got here. What was the most trying part of becoming a Chef? Well nothing other than trying itself. Long hours in a kitchen, excessive pressure from your head chef and clients that want you to perform magic. How can we run a healthy dietary plan on just Nigerian food We can cook with less oil to start with. Don't overcook your vegetables and actually t...

Spotlight on Lydia Oladokun

Before meets after I was actually a slim but not too slim lady and my husband, fit and trim carried me on our wedding day about a decade ago. I used to think I was just big until I realized I was just eating the wrong things. One day I went to the hospital for a medical check up and my doctors announced to me that my health was in trouble. This was a wake up call for me. Fatigue, allergies and pains were draining my entire life. It was at this moment I decided I was going to make a change, not just for me but also for my family; we were going healthy. Even before being alerted about my obesity, I was always feeling tired, yawning, experiencing extreme exhaustion and fatigue, ankle and knee issues, recurrent asthma-like conditions, serious sneezing, cramps, intense menstrual pains, short breathe, weak immunity and susceptibility to any infectious condition nearby to name a few, were all things I experienced on a regular basis. I added so much weight after 2 childbir...
